Kids Can Volunteer Too!

As the new year approaches, many parents make a resolution to get their children involved in volunteering, but don’t know where to start. Afterall, it’s not practical to take a six-year-old to serve soup at a homeless shelter. Without bragging, that’s where Sondra’s latest book comes in handy. When she was 16, she wrote “77 Creative Ways Kids Can Serve” (Wesleyan Publishing) The book gives steps by step directions to fun and easy volunteer projects. And yes, of course, she includes Soles4Souls also! Kids can donate shoes to our shoe charity, which is a great way to recycle shoes. Here’s what Ladies’ Home Journal had to say about her book.

Getting children engaged in service early on is important for building compassion and empathy. There are many ways families can start volunteering. Check out Doing Good Together (www.doinggoodtogether.org). This organization is an excellent resource for those who are interested in finding family-friendly service opportunities.

It was a great book. Wesleyan asked me to review it on my blog. Check out what I had to say at http://blog.seattlepi.com/teentalk/archives/170526.asp. I would love it if you left a comment! Thanks!
